Special Olympics ACT - Junior National Games

OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF 2ND JUNIOR NATIONAL GAMES

Tuesday 22 January

at the Australian Insitiute of Sport

ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation Mr Andrew Barr officially launched the Games on this day at a star-studded event. Joined by Olympic swimmers Alice Mills and Brenton Rickard also local Brumbies rugby stars Tyron Smith, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Josh Homes, the ACT junior athletes were introduced to the public and celebrated in the leadup to the games.

The Junior National Games has received great support from local businesses and sporting bodies. This ongoing support helps to provide an opportunity for our youth to get involved and to develop their skills in a fun and safe sporting environment.

The 2008 Junior National Games will comprise 8 sports and a demonstration sport and are for children under the age of 16. It is a great honour for Canberra to be selected as the host city for the next Games with athletes expected to travel from each State and Territory in Australia as well as from New Zealand and some other Pacific and South East Asian Countries.

The Sports

Individual sports - Athletics, Gymnastics, Swimming and Tennis

Team sports - Basketball and Soccer

Skills - Cricket and Golf

Demonstration sport - Sailing

Getting Involved

A number of volunteers are required in both the lead up and during the event.

Information for families interested in attending any of the sports, or the Opening & Closing ceremonies is contained in the Family Package, which you may download here.
